Update

How to update the Threads app

New features, like web messages and communities, often need the latest version. Updating also fixes bugs and crashes.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap your profile picture at the top right.
  3. Scroll to Upcoming automatic updates and tap Update next to Threads.
  4. To update automatically: Settings → App Store → App Updates on.

Android

  1. Open Google Play.
  2. Tap your profile picture → Manage apps & device.
  3. Tap Updates available, then Update next to Threads.
  4. To update automatically: open the Threads listing, tap ⋮ and turn on Enable auto update.

  2. Missing a new feature? Do a hard refresh: Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac).
  3. Keep your browser up to date.

Check your version: in Threads, open your profile → menu → Settings → About. Compare it with the version in the store listing.

Delete and reinstall Threads without losing anything

Your posts, followers and messages live on your account, not on your phone, so reinstalling is safe. Use it to fix crashes, loading problems or a stuck update.

Check before deleting

  • Unsent text in the composer
  • Photos you haven't saved elsewhere

Is the Threads app free to download?
Yes. Threads is free on the App Store and Google Play, and free to use at threads.com. The App Store lists optional in-app purchases, but you don't need to pay to post, follow or message.
What do I need to download Threads?
An iPhone or iPad with iOS 16.3 or later, an Android phone or tablet with Google Play, or any modern web browser. You also need to be at least 13 and have an Instagram account to sign up.
Who makes the official Threads app?
Meta. On the App Store the seller is Instagram, Inc., and on Google Play the developer is Meta Platforms, Inc. Avoid apps from any other developer that use the Threads name.
Can I download Threads on Windows or Mac?
There's no separate download to install. Use threads.com in your browser, and install it as an app from Chrome or Edge, or add it to the Dock from Safari on a Mac.
Why can't I find Threads in my app store?
Your device may be on an older system version, your store account may be set to a country where Threads isn't offered, or parental controls may hide it. Run the compatibility check above, then see the install problems guide.
Will I lose my posts if I delete the Threads app?
No. Posts, followers, messages and scheduled posts are stored on your account. Delete and reinstall the app, log in again, and everything is still there. Deleting the app doesn't delete your account.
