How feeds work

How each feed decides what people see

The feed shapes everything: who finds you, how fast you grow and what kind of posts work.

Threads: recommendation-first

Most of what people see comes from accounts they don't follow yet, picked by Meta's ranking. Good news for new accounts: one strong post can reach far beyond your followers. Replies and conversation carry a lot of weight.

X: fast, ranked and real-time

The For You feed mixes followed and recommended accounts, with a strong pull towards what's happening right now. Paid Premium accounts get a ranking boost in replies and search, so reach for free accounts can be harder.

Bluesky: you pick the algorithm

The default is a chronological Following feed. On top of that, anyone can build a custom feed, and users pin the ones they like. Getting into popular topic feeds and starter packs is the main way to grow.

By goal

The best platform for brands, creators, news and developers

Brands & small businesses

Threads first

Largest audience, ads in the same Meta Ads Manager you may already use for Instagram and Facebook, and a feed that shows posts to non-followers. Keep X for customer service if your customers are there.

Creators & personal brands

Threads, then the others

Threads is easiest for growing from zero, especially if you have an Instagram following. X can pay creators through Premium revenue sharing and subscriptions. Bluesky rewards consistent niche voices.

News, journalism & live events

X and Bluesky

X is still the fastest place for breaking news and live commentary. Many journalists, researchers and academics now post on Bluesky too. Threads works well for discussion after the moment.

Developers & automation

Bluesky or Threads

Bluesky's open protocol and Threads' free official API both make posting, scheduling and analytics easy to build. X's API is paid, which matters for side projects and small teams.

Bluesky

Custom feeds and starter packs make it easy to find and join a specific community, from science to art. Threads communities are growing fast and are worth testing too.

Advertisers

Threads or X

Threads ads run through Meta's ad system with its targeting and placements. X has its own ad platform. Bluesky doesn't sell ads, so reach there is organic only.

Using all three

Should you post on all three?

You can, if you adapt rather than copy-paste. A simple, realistic setup:

  1. Pick a home platformPut most of your energy into the one that matches your main goal, and reply to people there every day.
  2. Write for the shortest limitA post that fits in 280 characters works everywhere. Expand it on Threads (500) or split it into a thread.
  3. Adapt the tagsOne topic tag on Threads, a couple of hashtags at most on X, and just plain text on Bluesky, where feeds do the sorting.
  4. Schedule, then show upQueue posts ahead of time, but answer replies yourself. Conversation is what grows every one of these networks.
  5. Review monthlyCompare replies, followers and clicks per hour spent. Drop or shrink the platform that isn't paying back.

Works across platforms

  • Short, specific posts with one clear point
  • Questions that are easy to answer
  • Native images and short videos
  • Replying fast in the first hour

Hurts across platforms

  • Identical copy-paste on every network
  • Auto-posted links with no context
  • Hashtag lists
  • Posting and never replying
FAQ

Threads vs X vs Bluesky FAQ

Is Threads bigger than X?
On mobile, yes by daily use: Similarweb data from January 2026 showed Threads ahead of X in daily mobile app users. X is still much bigger on the web and desktop, and X's last shared monthly figure (600 million, 2024) is not directly comparable with Threads' 500 million+ monthly users reported in June 2026.
Is Bluesky better than Threads?
It depends on your goal. Bluesky has no ads, an open protocol and feeds you choose yourself, but a much smaller audience. Threads has far more reach and ads for businesses. Many people use Threads for reach and Bluesky for a specific community.
Which is best for growing a following from zero?
Threads usually, because its For you feed shows posts from accounts people don't follow yet. On X, Premium accounts get extra visibility; on Bluesky, growth comes from custom feeds and starter packs.
Do Threads, X and Bluesky have ads?
Threads and X both show ads. Threads ads rolled out to all users worldwide in January 2026 through Meta Ads Manager. Bluesky does not show ads.
Can I follow Bluesky or Mastodon users from Threads?
Threads connects to the fediverse using ActivityPub, so you can share posts with and follow people on Mastodon and other fediverse servers if you turn on fediverse sharing. Bluesky uses a different protocol (AT Protocol), so it isn't directly connected to Threads, though third-party bridges exist.
What is the character limit on Threads, X and Bluesky?
Threads allows 500 characters per post, plus longer text attachments. X allows 280 for free accounts and up to 25,000 with Premium. Bluesky allows 300 characters.
