Threads APK: The Safe Way to Get Threads on Android

Looking for the Threads APK? Threads is free on Google Play, so there's no need to sideload it from an APK site, and doing so can put your Instagram account at risk. Here's how to get the real app, what to do if your phone has no Google Play, and how to check a copy you've already installed.

How to spot the official Threads app

Four details that every genuine copy of Threads has. If any don't match, it isn't the real app.

Meta Platforms, Inc.

Shown under the app name on Google Play.

2

Package name

com.instagram.barcelona

"Barcelona" was Threads' internal codename. It appears in the Google Play link.

3

The only official Android download link.

4

Price

Free

Anyone charging for Threads, or asking for a "verification fee", is a scam.

APK risks

Why downloading a Threads APK is risky

Threads logs in with your Instagram account. A tampered app can see everything you type, including your password.

🦠
Malware

Repackaged APKs can hide spyware, adware or banking trojans inside a working copy of Threads.

🔑
Stolen login

A modified app can record your Instagram username, password and login codes as you type them.

🕰️
No updates

Sideloaded apps don't auto-update from Play, so you miss security fixes and new features.

🧩
Broken features

Old or modified versions can crash, fail to log in or get blocked by Meta.

🚫
Account risk

Using unofficial or modified clients can get your account flagged or restricted.

🛡️
No Play Protect checks

Apps from unknown sites skip Google Play's review before you install them.

Paste a link to check it

This is a simple pattern check, not a virus scan. When in doubt, don't download - open Google Play yourself and search for Threads by Meta Platforms, Inc.

    Check your app

Check whether your Threads app is genuine

Not sure where your copy came from? Android tells you.

    1. Open app infoLong-press the Threads icon → App info (ⓘ), or Settings → Apps → Threads.
    2. Check where it came fromScroll down and tap App details (Store section). It should say the app was downloaded from Google Play Store. "Package installer", a browser or a file manager means it was sideloaded.
    3. Compare with Google PlayOpen the Threads listing on Google Play. If it shows Open or Update, Play recognises your app. If it shows Install, or you have two Threads icons, your copy is unofficial.
    4. Run Play ProtectGoogle Play → profile picture → Play Protect → Scan. It checks all apps, including sideloaded ones.
    No Google Play

Use Threads on a phone without Google Play

Huawei phones without Google services, Amazon Fire tablets and de-Googled phones can still use Threads safely - through the browser.

    1. Open threads.com in Chrome, Edge, Samsung Internet or Huawei Browser.
    2. Log in with your Instagram account.
    3. Open the browser menu (⋮ or ≡) and tap Install app or Add to Home screen.
    4. Open Threads from its new Home screen icon. It runs full-screen, like an app, and always stays up to date.

The web version lets you read, post, schedule, reply and message. See Threads on the web for everything it can do.

    FAQ

    Threads APK FAQ

Is there an official Threads APK?
Meta distributes Threads for Android through Google Play. The official package name is com.instagram.barcelona and the developer is Meta Platforms, Inc. Use the Play listing rather than an APK file from another website.
Is it safe to download the Threads APK?
It's not recommended. APK files from other websites can be modified, outdated or contain malware, they don't update automatically, and a tampered app could capture your Instagram password. Google Play is free and safer.
How do I get Threads without Google Play?
Open threads.com in your phone's browser, log in, then use the browser menu to Install app or Add to Home screen. It works like an app and is always up to date.
Is "Threads Plus" or "Threads Mod" real?
No. Meta doesn't make any Plus, Pro, Mod or Premium version of Threads. Apps with those names are unofficial and may be harmful. Delete them and change your Instagram password if you logged in.
    What is com.instagram.barcelona?
It's the official package name of the Threads Android app. "Barcelona" was Meta's internal codename for Threads during development. You'll see it in the Google Play link.
Threads says my device isn't compatible. Should I use an APK?
Usually not. Current versions may not run well on unsupported devices, and older APKs miss security fixes. Use threads.com in your browser instead; see the Android guide for compatibility details.
